In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Fiori Lorett, a second-generation tattoo artist from Brazil, who has traveled the world perfecting her craft. With over two decades of experience, Fiori has developed a deep passion for Neo-Traditional tattooing. She shares her unique journey, from growing up in a family immersed in art and travel, to her experiences tattooing across Europe, and how she’s found her artistic voice in Neo-Traditional designs.
So Fiori, tell us about your journey into tattooing?
Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved drawing and creating art. My mom is a tattoo artist, so I had the privilege of being exposed to tattooing from a very young age—since I was 9, actually. This early exposure gave me a lot of insight into the techniques and knowledge of tattooing. As a result, I’m proud to be a second-generation female tattoo artist. I’m originally from Brazil, and I started tattooing when I was just 15. Now, 22 years later, I’ve recently moved to New York. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in various styles, but lately, I’ve been very into Neo-Traditional.
Being from Brazil, how did you end up in New York?
Thanks to my mom’s love for traveling and my dad being a circus performer, I grew up moving around Brazil a lot. In 2002, I started tattooing, and my life revolved around art, music, and travel. When I was 19, I decided to take a big leap and travel on my own for the first time. My first stop was London, where I worked as an apprentice in a tattoo shop. That experience abroad was life-changing. After a year in London, I moved to Italy to explore new tattoo scenes and immerse myself in a different culture. I spent three years in Italy, with frequent visits back to Brazil. Then I spent 9 years in Spain, where I ran my own business for 5 years. Those were some of the best years of my life, filled with both challenges and amazing experiences. But eventually, I started craving more freedom, so I hit the road again, focusing more on Neo-Traditional tattooing, which had become my passion. After working in Germany for a few years and continuing to explore different cultures, I’ve now decided to make New York my base. I’m excited to start new projects and embrace a fresh approach.
How would you describe the Neo-Traditional tattoo style?
Neo-Traditional is a style that really brings together elements from all styles. It incorporates different techniques like thick lines, fine lines, layering, color, and black and gray. It can really be anything you want it to be—it’s incredibly versatile.
How would you differentiate Neo-Traditional tattoos from Old-School tattoos?
The main difference is that Neo-Traditional designs follow the flow of the body more naturally. Old School designs tend to be more sticker-like.
Why do you feel drawn to Neo-Traditional tattoos?
With Neo-Traditional, your body becomes a canvas, and it feels like you’re wearing a piece of art. There’s something very glamorous and elegant about it. Ever since I started working in this style, I’ve fallen in love with it. I’m super hyped to take on new projects and work with awesome clients!
