She made history as the first African American woman to own a Beverly Hills tattoo studio, Enigma Tattoo. Growing up in Chicago's South Side, Kat Tat discovered her passion for art at a young age. Gaining inspiration from her mother, she took art classes throughout high school, showing a natural talent and eye for detail. When friends started getting tattoos, Kat was the one they would call on for drawings.
A good student in high school, she got accepted to college at University of Missouri on a math scholarship. She had plans of being a math teacher but art and tattooing were always calling her. She ordered her first tattoo kit and started tattooing friends her freshman year. At one point, she had to make a decision to pursue math or a career in tattooing – she went all in with on art marking the beginning of her extraordinary journey.
Upon dropping out of university, she was met with criticism and uncertainty. However, she started working at two different shops at the same time to hone her craft and learn as much as she could. She took her work to the next level working under talented professionals.
Kat Tat gained widespread recognition after joining the cast of VH1's reality series "Black Ink Crew: Chicago." Her talent and charisma captivated audiences, propelling her to fame within the tattoo community. However, she faced criticism and adversity along the way, but she refused to let negativity deter her from her goals.
In 2018, Kat Tat made a pivotal decision to leave "Black Ink Crew" and pursue her entrepreneurial aspirations. This marked the inception of her tattoo studio, Enigma Beverly Hills, where she aimed to redefine the tattoo experience by combining artistry with luxury. Enigma Beverly Hills quickly gained acclaim, attracting a clientele consisting of celebrities and influencers seeking Kat Tat's distinctive artistic style.
Enigma Tattoo is a special place that leaves behind the stereotypes associated with many shops. All the artists are not only tattoo artists, but fine artists as well.
Kat has a unique ability to take ideas and concepts and turn them into incredible pieces of art that hold true meaning. Kat not only collaborates with people and their ideas, but makes them feel comfortable throughout the entire process. One client who just purchased a session through Co:Create was slightly skeptical that it was even her he was getting a tattoo from so she Facetimed him directly and got to know him and learn more about his idea.
